Literary essay about "The Prison"

In the L/L Writing class we had to make a literary essay about a story we read in class. I decided writing about "The Prison ".

"The Prison", written by Bernard Malamud was a story about a man called Tommy, that worked in a candy shop because he had stolen in the past, but he was very sad there. One day a girl appeared and while Tommy was not looking she started stealing. When Tommy realized that, he did not know how to tell her to stop. This essay will analyze the characters: Tommy and The little girl of "The Prison".
Tommy was the main character, he always wanted to be a shoemaker but in the past he had stolen a liquor store; so his father, made a treat with Rosa´s father and made them married and work in a candy shop; and he was not happy with that. He could be not phisically in prison, but he was mentally there "Thought he tried not to talk of it, at twenty-nine Tommy Castelli´s life was a screaming bore ". But one day a little girl appeared and while he was not looking she stole two chocolates. When he realized about this he wanted to help her, because he did not want her to finish like him; but he did not know how to tell her "He felt the ought to do something for her". The days passed but he was not able to tell her; at the end he wrote her a letter, and he left it in the chocolate´s box.
The little girl was a secondary character. She seemed to be innocent but she was a thief. At the end of the story, when Tommy hit Rossa because he wanted to protect her, she showed him her tongue, like if it was a game for her, she showed that she could not care less "The girl, like a grotesque dancer, half-ran, half-fell forward, but at the door she managed to turn her white face and thrust out at him her red tongue". She represented Tommy´s past and through her, he remembered the mistakes he made.
This essay will analyze the characters: Tommy and The little girl of "The Prison".I think Tommy was a good man, with a sad past. He had to marry someone he did not really like. On the other hand, the girl could not care about anyone. It was not important to her any consequence that could happen. In this story freedom did not exist, it was pessimist but there was a surprising ending.
